Diabetes data for Romania

Regional prevalence according to the PREDATORR study (2014).

According to official data published by the Romanian Ministry of Health in September 2012 there were registered 802827 persons with diabetes out of which 67% were living in urban areas. 14.5%  of these persons are treated with insulin. In the map on the left you may see the distribution of the number of persons with diabetes in the counties of Romania (September 2012).

In 2011 there were 2,651 cases of children with diabetes (under 14 years of age) out of which 61% were living in urban areas.

In the first nine month of 2012 there were registered 47505 new cases. The estimated incidence of diabetes is about 68,000 new cases per year. In 2010 the incidence rate for children was 262 new cases per year.


In a populational study that ended in early 2014 the estimated prevalence of diabetes in the adult population is over 11%. The details of the study may be seen [here]

The sixth edition of the IDF Atlas estimates that in Romania there are 851,000 persons with diagnosed diabetes  and about 293,000 persons with undiagnosed diabetes (2013).
